Customers and management demand schedules, and incorrect guessing makes life miserable for everyone involved. Technical projects aren’t just about code, but about code delivered at a given point in time.
  • Keep management off your back so you can get development work done.
  • Make honest schedules everyone can live with.
  • Track your progress effectively to avoid 11th hour rushes.
  • Learn lightweight estimation and tracking techniques that keep process to a minimum.
  • Stop your project from stalling, or sliding backwards.
  • Handle change requests without stress.
Andy Lester is the project manager for socialtext Open. He’s a leader in the open source QA community, maintaining a dozen Perl testing-related modules. He also does public relations for The Perl Foundation. Lately he’s turned his attention to Ruby not-on-Rails, and wikis as social lubricant. His current non-code project is “Pragmatic Job Hunting” for the Pragmatic Programmers.
